How to use this calculator
Dogs do not age at a uniform rate. All dogs age rapidly in the first 2 years (reaching ~24 human years by age 2), then slow down. Larger breeds age faster than smaller ones in middle age, leading to shorter lifespans.

Frequently asked questions
Is the "multiply by 7" rule accurate?
No — the "7x rule" is a rough approximation that ignores how dogs age rapidly in early years and how size affects aging. A 2-year-old dog is closer to 24 human years, not 14. A 15-year-old small dog is closer to 76, not 105.
Why do larger dogs have shorter lifespans?
Larger dogs grow faster and their bodies experience more cellular wear more quickly. Giant breeds may develop age-related conditions like arthritis, cancer, and heart disease several years earlier than small breeds.
When is a dog considered a senior?
It depends on size: small dogs are senior at ~10–12 years, medium dogs at 8–10 years, large dogs at 7–8 years, and giant breeds at just 5–6 years.

Why Dog Age Conversion Is Not Simply ×7
The popular "multiply by 7" rule was a rough approximation based on humans living ~70 years and dogs living ~10. In reality, dogs age very rapidly in their first 2 years and much more slowly thereafter, and larger breeds age faster than small ones.
AKC Dog Aging Guidelines by Size
The American Kennel Club and veterinary researchers recognize four size categories for aging: small (under 10kg), medium (10–25kg), large (25–45kg), and giant (over 45kg). A 10-year-old small dog is about 56 in human years, while a 10-year-old giant breed is around 88.
Why This Matters for Pet Health
Understanding your dog's human age equivalent helps with preventive care. A 7-year-old Labrador (mature adult to senior) should begin senior health screening — annual bloodwork, joint assessments, and dental checks. The same-age Chihuahua is still in their young adult prime.
