How to use this calculator

Volume (m³) = Area (m²) × Depth (m) | Cubic Yards = Volume (m³) × 1.30795

Multiply the garden bed area by the desired mulch depth to get the volume. Convert to cubic yards by multiplying by 1.30795. Divide volume by bag size to get number of bags needed.

  1. 1

Measure your garden bed area in square metres.

  2. 2

Enter the desired mulch depth in centimetres (7–10 cm is typical).

  3. 3

Read off the volume in cubic metres and cubic yards.

  4. 4

Use the bag counts to purchase the right number of bags.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should I apply mulch?

A depth of 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) is recommended for most garden beds. Too little mulch won't suppress weeds effectively; too much can suffocate plant roots and harbour pests.

What is the difference between cubic metres and cubic yards?

One cubic metre equals approximately 1.308 cubic yards. Bulk mulch in Australia and Europe is typically sold by the cubic metre; in North America it is sold by the cubic yard.

How many litres are in a cubic metre of mulch?

Exactly 1,000 litres. So a 50-litre bag fills 0.05 m³ of garden bed.

Why Mulch Your Garden Beds?

Mulch retains soil moisture, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter as it breaks down. Applying 7–10 cm of mulch each spring is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for garden health.

Bulk vs Bagged Mulch

Bulk mulch delivered by the cubic yard or metre is more economical for large areas. Bagged mulch (50 L or 2 cu ft bags) is convenient for small beds or top-up applications. Use this calculator to decide which option suits your project.

Types of Mulch

Common options include shredded wood bark, wood chips, sugar cane mulch, pine needles, and straw. Finer mulches break down faster and improve soil more quickly; coarser mulches last longer and are better for weed suppression.
