Frequently asked questions
Is 1 a prime number?
No. By definition, a prime number must have exactly two distinct divisors: 1 and itself. The number 1 has only one divisor (itself), so it does not qualify. This exclusion is important for the fundamental theorem of arithmetic.
What is prime factorization used for?
Prime factorization is used to find GCF and LCM, simplify fractions, and break down composite numbers. In cryptography (RSA encryption), the difficulty of factoring very large numbers into primes is what makes encrypted data secure.
Are there infinitely many prime numbers?
Yes. Euclid proved this around 300 BC: assume a finite list of primes, multiply them all and add 1 — the result is either prime or has a prime factor not in your list. Contradiction. So primes go on forever.
What is the largest known prime number?
As of 2024, the largest known prime is 2^136,279,841 − 1, a Mersenne prime with over 41 million digits, discovered by the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) project.

How to test if a number is prime
The trial division method checks all integers from 2 up to √n. If none divide n evenly, n is prime. For n = 97: √97 ≈ 9.8, so check 2, 3, 5, 7. None divide 97, so 97 is prime. More efficient algorithms (Miller-Rabin) are used for very large numbers.
The Sieve of Eratosthenes
To find all primes up to a limit, start with a list of all numbers 2 to N. Mark multiples of 2, then 3, then the next unmarked number, and so on. Unmarked numbers remaining are prime. This 2,200-year-old algorithm is still one of the most efficient ways to generate small primes.

RSA encryption relies on two large primes (each ~1,024 bits). Their product is public; the individual primes are private. Factoring the product is computationally infeasible with current hardware, which is the basis of internet security for HTTPS, banking, and messaging.
