How to use this calculator

RER = 70 × (weight_kg)^0.75 | DER = RER × Life Stage Factor

The Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is calculated using metabolic body weight. For overweight or obese cats, ideal weight is estimated first. The DER multiplier adjusts for life stage, reproductive status, and activity (indoor vs outdoor).

  1. 1

Enter your cat's current weight in kilograms.

  2. 2

    Select their life stage.

  3. 3

Select their body condition (your vet can help assess this).

  4. 4

Indicate if they are neutered and their indoor/outdoor status.

  5. 5

Read the recommended daily calorie intake and food amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does body condition affect the calories calculated?

For overweight or obese cats, we use an estimated ideal body weight rather than current weight to calculate calorie needs. Feeding based on current weight would maintain or worsen obesity.

Should I feed my cat wet or dry food?

Both can meet nutritional needs. Wet food has higher moisture content (important for urinary health), while dry food is more calorie-dense and easier to store. Many vets recommend a mix of both.

How many times a day should I feed my cat?

Most adult cats do well with 2 meals per day. Kittens should be fed 3–4 times daily. Puzzle feeders and portion-controlled automatic feeders can help manage weight in indoor cats.

Why Cat Calorie Needs Differ from Dogs

Cats are obligate carnivores with different metabolic needs than dogs. They require higher protein intake and cannot efficiently convert plant-based nutrients. Their RER formula is the same as dogs (70 × kg^0.75) but the DER multipliers reflect their lower activity and higher neutering effect.

Obesity in Cats

Over 60% of domestic cats are overweight or obese, making it the most common preventable health problem in cats. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, arthritis, urinary issues, and liver disease. Neutered indoor cats have the lowest calorie needs and are most prone to weight gain.

Wet vs Dry Food for Weight Management

Wet food is often better for weight loss because it has higher water content and lower calorie density — cats feel full on fewer calories. Dry food is convenient and better for dental health, but must be carefully portioned for weight management.
