How to use this calculator

CRR = Runs / Overs | RRR = Runs Needed / Overs Remaining | Overs = whole + balls/6

Fractional overs are converted by adding balls/6. Current run rate divides runs scored by overs bowled. Required run rate divides runs needed by overs remaining.

  1. 1

Select whether you want Current Run Rate or Required Run Rate.

  2. 2

Enter the runs scored and overs bowled (plus any additional balls).

  3. 3

For Required Run Rate, also enter the target and overs remaining.

  4. 4

Read the calculated run rates and projected match total.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good run rate in cricket?

In T20 cricket, a run rate above 8 is generally required to post a competitive total. In ODIs, a run rate above 6 is considered strong. In Tests, run rate is less important than wickets in hand.

How are partial overs counted?

Each over has 6 balls. If 3 balls of the 16th over have been bowled, the team has bowled 15.3 overs, which equals 15.5 overs mathematically (15 + 3/6 = 15.5). This calculator handles this conversion automatically.

What does a negative run rate gap mean?

If the Required Run Rate is less than the Current Run Rate, the batting team is ahead of the required rate — a negative gap means they are on track to win at the current scoring pace.

Current vs Required Run Rate

Current Run Rate (CRR) measures how fast a team is scoring right now. Required Run Rate (RRR) measures how fast the batting team must score to win. Comparing the two tells you at a glance whether the team is ahead or behind the chase.

Why Run Rate Matters in T20 and ODIs

In limited-overs cricket, run rate is the primary pressure gauge. Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) adjustments are applied when rain interrupts a match, using a mathematical model based on runs required and resources (overs and wickets) remaining.

Projecting a Match Total

Multiplying the current run rate by the total overs in the innings gives a projected total — a useful benchmark for assessing whether a team is on track for a competitive score.
