Frequently asked questions
What does -110 mean in moneyline betting?
-110 is the standard "juice" or vig on point spread bets in American sports. You must stake $110 to profit $100. This 10% margin is the bookmaker's fee. Both sides of a spread bet are typically priced at -110.
How do I convert American odds to decimal?
Positive American odds: decimal = (odds/100) + 1. So +150 = 2.50. Negative American odds: decimal = (100/odds) + 1. So -150 = 1.667.
What is the breakeven win rate?
The breakeven win rate is the percentage of bets you must win to break even over many bets. At -110, you need to win 52.4% of bets to break even. At +150, you only need to win 40% to break even — which is why underdogs at long prices can be profitable even with a low win rate.

Favourite vs Underdog in Moneyline Betting
The favourite has negative American odds (−150, −200) because you must risk more to win less. The underdog has positive odds (+150, +300) because you risk less to win more. The spread of odds reflects the bookmaker's assessment of each team's winning probability.
Understanding the Breakeven Win Rate
Every bet has a breakeven win rate — the minimum winning percentage to avoid losing money. At even odds (+100 / 2.00 decimal), you need to win 50%. At -110, you need 52.4%. The breakeven rate rises with the favourite's price and falls for underdogs.
When Moneylines Beat Point Spreads
Moneylines are best when you expect a team to win but are unsure about the margin. Point spreads add a margin of victory requirement; moneylines only require a win. For large favourites (-300 or more), moneylines require a big stake for a small profit, making spreads or alternate lines more attractive.
