How to use this calculator

Pace = Total Time / (Distance / 100); Time = Pace × (Distance / 100); Distance = Time / Pace × 100

Swimming pace is expressed as time per 100 metres. Given any two of pace, distance, and total time, the third can be calculated. Yards conversion: 1 m = 1.09361 yd.

  1. 1

Choose what you want to calculate: pace, total time, or distance.

  2. 2

Select the swim distance (pool event or open water).

  3. 3

Enter the known values — time and distance for pace, or pace and distance for time.

  4. 4

Review your pace in both metres and yards formats.

Frequently asked questions

Why is swimming pace measured per 100m?

Standard pool lengths are 25 m or 50 m, and swimmers complete multiple lengths per set. A 100 m pace is a convenient unit that roughly corresponds to 2 lengths in a 50 m pool or 4 lengths in a 25 m pool.

What is a good 1500m swim time?

For recreational swimmers, 30–40 minutes (2:00–2:40 /100m pace) is common. Competitive age-group swimmers target 20–25 minutes. Elite open-water 1500m swimmers race at under 16 minutes.

How does open-water pace compare to pool pace?

Most swimmers are 5–10% slower in open water due to navigation, wetsuit adaptation (which can also speed some swimmers), waves, and lack of push-off turns. For planning purposes, add 10–15 seconds per 100m to your pool pace when estimating open-water times.

What is CSS pace in swimming?

CSS (Critical Swim Speed) is the pace you can sustain aerobically for a long swim without accumulating lactate. It is calculated from a 400m and 200m time trial: CSS = (T400 − T200) / 200 per 100m. CSS training builds swim-specific aerobic base.

Understanding Swimming Pace

Unlike running where pace is measured per kilometre or mile, swimming pace is measured per 100 metres (or 100 yards in US pools). This unit reflects the repetitive lap structure of pool swimming and allows easy comparison across distances. Triathletes use this calculator to plan open-water splits, while pool swimmers use it to set interval targets.

Pool vs Open Water Conversion

This calculator works equally well for pool and open-water events. Select your distance from the dropdown — including the standard open-water distances of 1 mile and 2 miles used in many triathlons and open-water races. Remember to account for the roughly 5–10% performance difference between pool and open-water environments when setting race-day expectations.
