How to use this calculator

Animal = ANIMALS[(birth_year − 4) mod 12] | Element = ELEMENTS[⌊((birth_year − 4) mod 10) / 2⌋]

The 12-animal cycle repeats every 12 years starting from the Rat. Subtracting 4 from the birth year and taking the remainder when divided by 12 gives the animal index (0 = Rat through 11 = Pig). The 5 elements cycle every 10 years (2 years per element), derived similarly from the birth year modulo 10.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Chinese zodiac year start on January 1?

No — the Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or early February, your Chinese zodiac animal may belong to the previous year. For precise results, check the exact Chinese New Year date for your birth year.

What do the five elements mean in Chinese astrology?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water each modify the base animal sign. For example, a Wood Rat has different qualities to a Metal Rat. The element cycle repeats every 10 years (2 years per element), so the full animal+element cycle completes every 60 years.

What is the difference between Yin and Yang years?

In Chinese cosmology, even-numbered years are Yang (active, outward energy) and odd-numbered years are Yin (receptive, inward energy). This polarity applies to the person born that year and is said to complement their animal and elemental traits.

The 12 Chinese zodiac animals

Chinese astrology uses a 12-year cycle, each year associated with an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each animal carries distinct personality archetypes, strengths, and weaknesses. Unlike Western astrology which is month-based, Chinese zodiac is determined entirely by birth year — though birth month and day matter in more detailed Chinese astrological systems (Ba Zi / Four Pillars).

The 60-year cycle and elemental signs

The combination of 12 animals and 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) creates a 60-year cycle, meaning each specific animal-element pairing (e.g., Metal Rat) recurs once every 60 years. This is why 60th birthdays hold special significance in Chinese culture. The current cycle began in 1984 with the Wood Rat and will complete in 2043.
