Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?

The primary difference is the zodiac system. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the spring equinox. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to fixed stars. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the two systems are currently about 23–24 degrees apart (the ayanamsa), meaning most people's Vedic sun sign differs from their Western sun sign by one sign.

Why is the Moon sign so important in Vedic astrology?

In Jyotish, the Moon sign (Rashi) is considered more important than the Sun sign for describing personality, emotional nature, and life circumstances. The Moon represents the mind, emotions, and instincts. Many Vedic predictions and dashas (planetary periods) are calculated from the Moon sign and Nakshatra position.

What is a Nakshatra?

Nakshatras are 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into 13°20' segments. Each Nakshatra has its own deity, symbol, ruling planet, and set of characteristics. Your Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines your Vimshottari Dasha starting point — the planetary period system that governs life timing in Vedic astrology.

Introduction to Jyotish astrology

Jyotish (Vedic astrology) is one of the oldest astrological systems in the world, originating in ancient India and documented in the Vedic texts. Unlike Western astrology's Sun-sign focus, Jyotish emphasizes the Moon sign and Ascendant (Lagna), along with a complex system of planetary periods (dashas) and divisional charts (vargas). It remains widely practiced in India for timing life decisions, compatibility assessment, and spiritual guidance.

Rashi and Nakshatra in daily life

Many Indians consult their Rashi and Nakshatra for auspicious timing of important events — weddings, business launches, naming ceremonies. The 27 Nakshatras provide a finer layer of analysis than the 12 Rashis alone. Each Nakshatra has associated qualities, deities, and influences that color the Moon's expression within a Rashi. The combination of Rashi and Nakshatra gives a nuanced portrait of the emotional and mental tendencies indicated at birth.
