Is readability a ranking factor?
Not directly. Google has confirmed it does not use Flesch-Kincaid as a ranking signal. However, readable content drives higher engagement (longer time on page, lower bounce rate), which indirectly supports rankings. Well-matched readability to your audience is good UX.

The average adult in the US, UK, and Australia reads at a Grade 7–9 level comfortably. Web content for a mass audience should target Grade 6–8 (Flesch 60–75). Academic content, medical, or legal writing is naturally harder — the goal is matching the score to your specific audience, not minimising it at all costs.
The limits of readability formulas
Flesch-Kincaid counts syllables and sentence length, but it doesn't measure vocabulary familiarity, logical structure, or clarity of ideas. A passage of short sentences using obscure words can score "easy" while being incomprehensible. Use readability scores as one signal among many, not as the sole measure of content quality.
