How to use this calculator
Brick face area includes the mortar joint (typically 10 mm). Double brick walls need 2× bricks. Add 5–10% for waste and cuts.
- 1
Enter the wall dimensions in metres and the brick dimensions in millimetres.
- 2
Select single (100 mm) or double (200 mm) brick wall.
- 3
Enter the number and size of any door or window openings to subtract.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks per square metre?
For a standard Australian brick (230×76×110 mm) with a 10 mm joint: approximately 50 bricks per m² for a single skin wall. Standard UK brick (215×65×102.5 mm) gives about 60 bricks per m². This calculator uses your specific brick dimensions.
What type of mortar do I need?
General purpose: 1 part cement : 4–5 parts bricklaying sand. For strong external walls: 1:4. For lightweight internal partitions: 1:5 or use a premixed bagged mortar. Never use building sand (fine) — use coarse bricklaying sand.
How much waste should I add?
Standard walls: 5–10%. Walls with curved sections or arches: 15–20%. When in doubt, add 10%. Having too many bricks is better than running short — bricks from different batches may have colour variations.

Brick bonds and laying patterns
Stretcher bond (all bricks laid length-wise): most common, economical, single-skin. English bond (alternating courses of stretchers and headers): very strong, used for double-skin structural walls. Flemish bond (alternating stretcher and header in each course): traditional decorative look. Running/offset bond: modern single-skin panels.
Mortar mixing and application
Mix only as much mortar as you can use in 1–2 hours. In hot weather, mortar dries faster — work in smaller batches. Wet the bricks lightly before laying if the weather is hot and dry (prevents the brick from drawing water from the mortar too fast, which weakens the bond). Aim for 10 mm joints, fully filled, for weathertight walls.
Brick: how it works
Construction estimation tools save time and reduce material waste by calculating exact quantities before you buy. This tool uses standard industry formulas for accurate estimates across common building and renovation tasks.
Who uses this tool?
Contractors, DIY homeowners, quantity surveyors, and architects use it to generate material lists before requesting quotes. It supports better project planning and reduces the risk of costly underestimates.
