How to use this calculator

Tiles = (Area × (1 + waste%)) / Tile area

Tile area = tile length × tile width (accounting for grout joint). Total tiles = room area with waste divided by single tile area.

  1. 1

Enter the room or wall dimensions in metres.

  2. 2

Enter the tile size in centimetres and the grout joint width in millimetres.

  3. 3

Set the waste percentage: 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal.

  4. 4

Enter tiles per box to get the number of boxes to purchase.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tiles for an L-shaped room?

Divide the room into two rectangles, calculate tiles for each section separately (including waste for each), then add them together. Avoid subtracting one area from another — this underestimates cuts needed at the join.

How much grout do I need?

Grout quantity depends on tile size, grout joint width, and joint depth. A rough rule: for a 3 mm joint with 30×60 cm tiles, approximately 1 kg of grout per m². Wider joints or smaller tiles need more grout.

What grout joint width should I use?

Rectified tiles (precisely cut): 1.5–3 mm. Standard floor tiles: 3–5 mm. Rustic or natural stone: 5–10 mm. Large format tiles (>600 mm): minimum 3 mm to allow for slight variation. Check the manufacturer's recommendation.

Tile layout patterns and waste

Straight (grid) layout: 10% waste. Offset/brick bond (each row offset by half): 10–12%. Diagonal (45°): 15–20% (more cuts at borders). Herringbone: 15–20%. Larger tiles have proportionally less waste than small mosaic tiles because fewer cuts are needed.

Choosing grout colour and type

Matching grout (same colour as tile) creates a seamless look. Contrasting grout highlights the tile pattern. Epoxy grout is more stain-resistant and waterproof than cement-based grout — worth considering for kitchens and showers. Always seal natural stone tiles and use epoxy or sanded grout for joints wider than 3 mm.

Tile: how it works

Construction estimation tools save time and reduce material waste by calculating exact quantities before you buy. This tool uses standard industry formulas for accurate estimates across common building and renovation tasks.

Who uses this tool?

Contractors, DIY homeowners, quantity surveyors, and architects use it to generate material lists before requesting quotes. It supports better project planning and reduces the risk of costly underestimates.
