How to use this calculator
Total flooring needed = room area × (1 + waste%). Diagonal or herringbone layouts need 15–20% waste; straight lay needs 10%.

For L-shaped rooms, enter the extra section's dimensions separately.

Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
Straight lay parallel to walls: 10%. 45° diagonal pattern: 15–20%. Herringbone or chevron: 15–20%. Complex rooms with many cuts: up to 20%. Always round up to the nearest full pack.
Should I buy extra and keep it?
Yes — keep a box of the same batch for future repairs. Flooring batches vary slightly in colour and shade. Matching a repair years later from a different batch may not look right.
What is the difference between m² and boxes/packs?
Flooring is sold in packs that cover a fixed area (e.g., 2.4 m² per pack). Divide your total area (with waste) by the pack coverage to find how many packs to buy. Always round up — never down.

Flooring types and layout considerations
Laminate and LVP (luxury vinyl plank): easiest to install, click-lock system. Solid hardwood: needs acclimatisation, not suitable for wet areas. Tiles: best for kitchens and bathrooms. Carpet: measured in m² with 5–10% waste. Always check which direction to lay planks — parallel to the longest wall or main light source usually looks best.
Acclimatisation and subfloor preparation
Most floating floor products (laminate, LVP, engineered wood) must be left in the room for 24–48 hours before installation to acclimatise to the humidity and temperature. The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat (within 3 mm over 1.8 m), and structurally sound. Uneven subfloors telegraph through the finished floor.
