Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?

Mean: sum divided by count (the average). Median: the middle value when sorted. Mode: the most frequently occurring value. For skewed data (like income), median is often more useful than mean.

When is the median better than the mean?

The median is better when data has extreme outliers. For example, average household income is misleading if a few billionaires inflate the mean. The median better represents the "typical" person.

Can data have more than one mode?

Yes — bimodal data has two modes, multimodal data has several. If no value repeats, there is no mode.

What is the range?

Range = maximum value − minimum value. It describes the spread of data. A large range indicates high variability; a small range indicates data is tightly clustered.

About average calculator

Mean, median, and mode explained

Three measures of central tendency

Mean, median, and mode all describe the "centre" of a dataset, but in different ways. Mean is sensitive to outliers. Median ignores extreme values. Mode identifies the most common value. For normally distributed data, all three are equal. For skewed data, they diverge.

Real-world examples

A class test with scores [55, 60, 65, 70, 95]: Mean = 69, Median = 65, Mode = none. The mean (69) is pulled up by the outlier 95. The median (65) better represents most students. In data analysis, always report which measure you are using.

Beyond the average: spread matters too

Two datasets can have the same mean but very different distributions. [50, 50, 50, 50] and [10, 20, 80, 90] both have a mean of 50, but the second is far more variable. Always pair averages with a measure of spread: range, variance, or standard deviation.
