Frequently asked questions
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
If weights total less than 100%, the calculator adjusts proportionally — it divides the weighted total by the sum of weights as a fraction. This allows you to calculate a partial grade with only some components entered, or a course with extra credit components.
Can I use this for courses with more than 4 components?
This calculator covers 4 components. For more, combine smaller assessments: if you have 5 quizzes each worth 4%, enter the average quiz score with a 20% weight. The same principle applies to any group of equal-weight items.
How do I know if my final exam can save my grade?
Use our "Required Grade Calculator" alongside this tool. Enter your current grade (before the final exam) and its weight to find exactly what score you need on the final to reach your target overall grade.
Weighted Coursework & Exam Grade Calculator
Why weighted grades matter
Not all assessments contribute equally to your final grade. A 90% on a 5-weight quiz contributes less than a 60% on a 40-weight final exam. The weighted average formula accounts for each component's relative importance so you understand exactly where your overall grade comes from — and which upcoming assessments have the most leverage to raise or lower it.
Strategic grade improvement
Knowing each component's contribution lets you prioritise your effort strategically. If the final exam is worth 35% and the next coursework is only 5%, your time should be heavily weighted toward exam preparation. This calculator shows exactly how many overall grade points each component adds, making that prioritisation explicit.
