Frequently asked questions
Why do grading scales differ between countries?
Historical, cultural, and academic tradition differences led each country to develop its own grading system. The US uses an A–F letter system, the UK uses degree classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third), India uses a 10-point CGPA or percentage system, and Australia uses HD/D/C/P/F. International students and employers need to convert grades between systems when comparing qualifications.
Is a 2:1 UK degree the same as a US B?
A UK 2:1 (60–69%) is roughly equivalent to a US B or B+. However, the comparison is imperfect because UK marking tends to be stricter — a 70% in the UK (First Class) is considered exceptional, while 70% in the US is a C. This calculator provides approximate equivalents for quick reference.
What is a GPA on a 4.0 scale?
The 4.0 GPA scale converts letter grades to numerical points: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0. Most US universities require a minimum GPA of 2.0 to remain enrolled and a 3.0+ for graduate school competitiveness. Plus/minus grades create finer gradations (A−=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.).

Converting grades for international applications
International students applying to universities abroad frequently need to convert their home country grades to the destination country's scale. Admissions committees also need to understand foreign transcripts. This calculator provides quick cross-scale equivalents to help students, parents, and admissions staff understand grades in context.
Understanding the 4.0 GPA system
Graduate school in the US typically requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for admission, with competitive programmes expecting 3.5+. Medical and law schools often require 3.7+. A single poor semester can significantly impact your GPA early on, but a strong upward trend matters almost as much as the absolute GPA number.
