Frequently asked questions

What if the required grade is above 100%?

If the calculator shows more than 100% is needed, your target grade is mathematically impossible no matter how well you do on the final. At this point, you may want to adjust your target grade or speak with your professor about extra credit opportunities.

How do I find my current grade before the final?

Your current grade should be the weighted average of all completed coursework, assignments, quizzes, and tests — excluding the final exam. Check your learning management system (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) or ask your professor for your running grade.

What if I have multiple remaining assessments, not just one final?

For multiple remaining assessments, treat the combined weight of all remaining work as the "final exam weight" and your target for that combined portion as the required score. For precise multi-component planning, calculate each component separately.

Understanding weighted grades

Most courses do not weight all assessments equally. A final exam worth 30% of your grade has a larger impact than three assignments worth 10% each. The formula accounts for these weights precisely: Required = (Target − Current × Pre-exam Weight) ÷ Final Weight. Even a small improvement in your current grade reduces what you need on the final.

Strategy when the required grade is high

If you need an 85%+ on your final to achieve your target, focus your study time on the highest-weight topics, past exam papers, and areas where you lost most points previously. If the math shows the target is unachievable, set a new realistic target — a slightly lower grade is far better than exhausting yourself chasing an impossible score.
