Frequently asked questions
How accurate are these percentile estimates?
The percentiles are based on published score distributions from official testing organisations (College Board, ACT, ETS, GMAC, British Council, ETS). They are accurate approximations and may vary slightly from the exact figure shown on your score report, which reflects the most recent test-taker population.
What SAT score do I need for top universities?
Top 10 universities (Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, etc.) typically have median SAT scores of 1500–1570. Top 25 universities average 1400–1500. State flagship universities often accept students with 1100–1300. A score above 1410 puts you in the top 10% of all test-takers.
What is a good GRE score for graduate school?
A "good" GRE score depends entirely on the programme. STEM programmes prioritise Quantitative scores; humanities focus on Verbal and Writing. Top-ranked programmes in most fields look for scores in the 160+ range (85th percentile+). Always check the published average scores for programmes you are targeting.

Why percentile rank matters more than raw score
A 1200 on the SAT tells you little on its own — it is the percentile rank (73rd) that reveals how that score compares to other applicants. Admissions committees and scholarship committees use percentile context to evaluate candidates. Understanding where your score falls in the distribution helps you assess whether you need to retake a test or if your score is competitive for your target schools.
Score improvement strategy
Moving from the 50th to the 75th percentile is typically much easier than moving from the 75th to the 90th. Identify which section of the test has the most room for improvement and focus your preparation there. Official practice tests from College Board, ETS, and ACT are the most reliable preparation materials because they reflect the actual scoring algorithm.
