Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Mbps (megabits per second) is used by internet providers to advertise speeds. MBps (megabytes per second) is used by file transfer applications. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, 100 Mbps = 12.5 MBps.
Why does my 100 Mbps internet only download at 12 MB/s?
Internet speeds are measured in megabits (Mb), but download managers show megabytes (MB). 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. This is not a problem — the speeds are equivalent, just displayed in different units.
How fast is 1 Gbps in MB/s?
1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps = 125 MB/s. A gigabit connection can theoretically transfer a 1 GB file in about 8 seconds.
What speeds do common connections offer?
Typical broadband: 50–500 Mbps. Gigabit fibre: 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps). USB 3.0: up to 5 Gbps. WiFi 6: up to 9.6 Gbps theoretical. 5G: 1–10 Gbps theoretical peak.
Data transfer speed conversion
Bits vs bytes in network speeds
The internet industry uses bits (b) for bandwidth — Kbps, Mbps, Gbps. Storage and file sizes use bytes (B) — KB, MB, GB. The critical conversion: 1 byte = 8 bits. So to convert a download speed from Mbps to MB/s, divide by 8. This distinction is intentional — ISPs use bits because the numbers look 8× larger.
Common speed reference points
1 Mbps: can stream SD video. 5 Mbps: HD streaming. 25 Mbps: 4K streaming. 100 Mbps: downloads large files quickly (~1 GB in ~80 seconds). 1 Gbps: 1 GB file in ~8 seconds. 10 Gbps (datacenter): 1 GB in ~0.8 seconds.
Factors affecting real-world speed
Advertised speeds are maximums, not guarantees. Real speeds depend on network congestion, router quality, WiFi interference, number of connected devices, and distance from the exchange. Wired ethernet connections are always faster and more reliable than WiFi.
Data transfer speed: how it works
Unit conversion matters across engineering, science, cooking, and everyday life. This tool applies internationally recognised conversion factors to deliver precise, instant results across all major unit systems — no manual lookup needed.
Who uses this tool?
Scientists, engineers, chefs, and international travellers use this tool daily to bridge the gap between different measurement systems. It eliminates the need to memorise conversion factors or hunt through reference tables.
