Frequently asked questions

What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to translate a human-readable domain name (like example.com) into machine-readable information such as IP addresses, mail servers, or other DNS records.

What is TTL in DNS?

TTL (Time to Live) is the number of seconds a DNS record is cached by resolvers before they re-query the authoritative nameserver. Lower TTL = faster propagation but more DNS queries. Typical values are 300 (5 min) to 86400 (24 hr).

What is the difference between A and AAAA records?

A records map a domain to an IPv4 address (e.g. 93.184.216.34). AAAA records map a domain to an IPv6 address (e.g. 2606:2800:220:1:248:1893:25c8:1946). Modern sites often have both.

Why might DNS records differ between resolvers?

DNS propagation is not instant. When you change a record, the old record is cached until its TTL expires. During this window, different resolvers may return different values.

About dns lookup

DNS Lookup — Query any DNS record in real time

How DNS works

The Domain Name System is a hierarchical, distributed database that translates domain names to IP addresses and other records. When you type a URL, your browser asks a resolver (e.g. your ISP or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1), which queries authoritative nameservers in a chain: root → TLD (.com) → domain nameserver.

Common DNS record types

A records map domains to IPv4 addresses. AAAA to IPv6. MX tells email servers where to deliver mail. NS identifies a domain's authoritative nameservers. CNAME creates an alias pointing to another domain. TXT records store arbitrary text — used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and domain verification.
