Frequently asked questions

How is the screenshot generated?

Screenshots are captured by Thum.io, a screenshot-as-a-service provider. Our server sends your URL to their rendering engine, which loads the page in a headless browser and returns the screenshot image. The process typically takes 2–10 seconds for first capture.

Will the screenshot show the latest version of the site?

Thum.io caches screenshots for a period. If the site was recently updated, you may see a slightly older version. For development testing, screenshots from this tool are best used as a quick visual check rather than a precise real-time preview.

Why might a screenshot fail or show incorrectly?

Some sites block headless browsers using bot detection. Sites requiring authentication show the login page. Some single-page apps (SPAs) may not fully render if they require JavaScript interaction. Heavy JavaScript sites may capture before all content loads.

Can I screenshot password-protected pages?

No. The screenshot is captured as an anonymous visitor would see the page. Login-protected content, paywalled articles, and pages requiring authentication will show the login or access-denied screen instead.

Use cases for website screenshots

Visual QA during development: verify a page looks correct before launch. Competitor research: quickly see how competitor pages are laid out. Social media previews: check what your OG image looks like. Client reports: document the current state of a site. Bug reporting: capture the visual state at the time of an issue.

Limitations of automated screenshots

Automated screenshot tools capture a static view — they don't interact with the page. Dynamic content (sliders, infinite scroll, lazy-loaded images) may not appear. Some sites block automated rendering. For comprehensive visual testing, consider tools like Playwright, Puppeteer, Percy, or Chromatic.
