Frequently asked questions
What is an NS record?
NS (Name Server) records identify the authoritative DNS servers for a domain. These are the servers that hold the "official" DNS records for your domain. When any resolver needs to look up a record for your domain, it ultimately queries your authoritative nameservers.
How do I find out which DNS provider a domain uses?
Look at the NS records. Cloudflare nameservers contain "cloudflare.com". AWS Route 53 uses "awsdns" in the hostname. Google Cloud DNS uses "googledomains.com". GoDaddy uses "domaincontrol.com".
Why do some domains have 4 nameservers?
Multiple nameservers provide redundancy. If one nameserver is unavailable, resolvers automatically try the others. Most DNS providers assign at least 2 nameservers; some assign 4 or more for maximum reliability.
How long does a nameserver change take to propagate?
NS record changes are controlled by the TLD registry (e.g. Verisign for .com) and can take 24–48 hours to fully propagate. The TTL on NS records is typically set by the registry, not you.

The DNS hierarchy
DNS is organized in a tree. Root servers know the TLD servers (.com, .org, .io). TLD servers know which nameservers are authoritative for each domain. Your NS records, registered with the TLD registry, tell the world which nameservers to query for your domain.
Why nameservers matter
Your DNS provider controls your nameservers. Changing DNS providers means changing NS records at your domain registrar. Until propagation is complete, different resolvers may query different nameservers and see different records.
