Frequently asked questions

Why does domain age matter for SEO?

Older domains often have more backlinks, established authority, and a history of trust signals. While Google hasn't confirmed age is a direct ranking factor, the compounding effects of a longer history (more links, more indexed content, more user trust) typically benefit older domains in search results.

Can I trust the registration date for all TLDs?

RDAP data is most reliable for common TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .io, etc.). Some country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) don't publish RDAP data or publish limited information. For unsupported TLDs, the tool may return limited or no data.

What happens when a domain expires?

After expiry, domains enter a grace period (usually 30–45 days) during which the registrant can renew. Then a redemption period (up to 75 days). Then it's deleted and becomes available for registration again. Expired domains with strong backlinks are often "dropped" and snapped up by domain investors.

Is it worth buying an older domain?

Old domains with good backlink profiles and clean history can provide an SEO head start. However, domains with spammy histories can carry a Google penalty. Always check the domain's backlink profile and Wayback Machine history before purchasing an aged domain.

What RDAP is

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for WHOIS. It provides structured JSON data about domain registrations, including registration dates, expiry dates, nameservers, and registrar information. It's more reliable and machine-readable than traditional WHOIS.

Domain age and trust

Search engines, ad networks, and security tools use domain age as one signal of legitimacy. A freshly registered domain used for email outreach or affiliate marketing is viewed with more suspicion than a 10-year-old domain with a history. This is why scammers often try to buy aged domains.
