Frequently asked questions

How do I value health insurance benefits?

If one employer pays your full health insurance premium and the other does not, the annual value of that benefit is the premium amount. Individual health insurance typically costs $4,000–$8,000 per year, and family plans $15,000–$22,000. Check what the employer pays vs what you pay to calculate the benefit value.

Why does PTO have a dollar value?

Each day of PTO is worth one day of salary. If you have 20 days of PTO at a $80,000 salary, that PTO is worth $80,000 / 260 × 20 = $6,154. An offer with more PTO but a lower salary may still be better total value once PTO is included.

What other benefits should I compare?

This calculator covers the most quantifiable benefits. Also consider: equity/stock options, 401(k) vesting schedule, life and disability insurance, professional development budget, remote work flexibility, commute cost, company culture, and career growth potential.

About job offer value calculator

Job Offer Comparison Calculator

Why base salary alone is misleading

A $90,000 offer without benefits can be worth less than an $80,000 offer with full health coverage, strong retirement matching, and generous PTO. Benefits can easily add $15,000–$30,000 in value on top of base salary. This calculator surfaces that hidden value so you can make a truly informed decision.

The retirement match multiplier

Employer retirement matching is free money with an immediate 100% return on your contribution. A 5% match on a $80,000 salary is $4,000 per year in guaranteed compensation that is also tax-advantaged. Accepting a lower-match offer to chase a higher salary often leaves money on the table.
