Frequently asked questions
What costs does this calculator include?
This calculator covers fuel, parking, the difference in lunch costs, and daily coffee or drink purchases. It does not include vehicle wear and tear (which typically adds $0.08–$0.15 per km), tolls, or public transport fares. Adding those costs would increase your actual savings from remote work.
How is annual time saved calculated?
We estimate commute time based on an average driving speed of 40 km/h for the round trip. This is a conservative urban average. Your actual savings could be higher if your commute involves significant stop-and-go traffic.
Can I use miles instead of kilometres?
Yes — just enter your distance in miles and set fuel efficiency in miles per litre (or adjust to miles per gallon context). The formula is proportional, so the relative savings calculation remains accurate.

The true cost of commuting
Most people dramatically underestimate what commuting costs them. A 20 km each-way daily commute with modest fuel, parking, and lunch costs can easily exceed $5,000–$8,000 per year. Adding the opportunity cost of time spent commuting — time that could be spent working, exercising, or sleeping — makes remote work one of the most financially valuable benefits an employer can offer.
Negotiating remote work using financial data
If you are negotiating a remote or hybrid arrangement with your employer, the savings shown here are a powerful data point. A $6,000 annual commuting cost savings is equivalent to a 10% pay rise on a $60,000 salary. Framing remote work as compensation makes the conversation easier and more concrete.
