Kilometers to meters: the relationship and formula
One kilometer corresponds to 1,000 meters here. That single figure is the whole conversion: take the number of kilometers, multiply by 1,000, and the product is the number of meters.
If an amount is already in meters, divide it by 1,000 to get kilometers; one meter is 0.001 kilometers.
Common kilometers-to-meters values
The table below lists 12 amounts of kilometers next to the matching meters. The amounts were picked to suit a ratio of 1,000, so the results stay easy to read.
| Kilometers (km) | Meters (m) |
|---|---|
| 0.01 | 10 |
| 0.05 | 50 |
| 0.1 | 100 |
| 0.25 | 250 |
| 0.5 | 500 |
| 1 | 1,000 |
| 2 | 2,000 |
| 5 | 5,000 |
| 10 | 10,000 |
| 25 | 25,000 |
| 50 | 50,000 |
| 100 | 100,000 |
The converter formats numbers the same way, which means the m column above is what you would see after typing the km value into the widget.
Step by step: km to m
With 0.042 km, the multiplication by 1,000 produces 42 m once rounded the way the widget rounds.
Example 2. For a different size, 0.0055 km, the result is 5.5 m. Dividing 5.5 by 1,000 gets you back to about 0.0055.
Going the opposite way, 65,000 meters comes to 65 kilometers using the inverse ratio 0.001.
Reverse direction (m to km)
If the amount you have is in meters, go to Meters to Kilometers. Here 1 m = 0.001 km, and the layout mirrors this page.

Frequently asked questions
One kilometer equals how many meters?
One kilometer equals 1,000 meters. The relationship is linear, so 10 km is 10,000 m and 100 km is 100,000 m.
How many kilometers are in one meter?
The widget shows 0.001 kilometers for each meter. For 10 meters, the result is 0.01 kilometers.
0.085 kilometers equals how many meters?
0.085 km converts to 85 m, using the ratio 1,000 between the two units.
Will the m figure be rounded?
Calculation uses ordinary floating-point numbers, then the display is trimmed: 10 significant digits for values from 1 to 1,000, 8 for values below 1, and up to 6 decimals above 1,000. For this pair, 0.123456789 km gives 123.456789 m and 1,234.5678 km gives 1,234,567.8 m.
What calculation sits behind km to m?
The unit table gives kilometers and meters each a multiplier against a common reference unit. Dividing one multiplier by the other leaves 1,000, which is applied to whatever number is entered.
How do I convert meters back to kilometers?
The page titled "Meters to Kilometers" covers it, or you can press the swap button in the widget above. For this direction multiply by 0.001, or equivalently divide by 1,000. As a check, 25 m comes to 0.025 km.
