Frequently asked questions

Why does economy car produce more emissions per person than long-haul flights?

On a per-passenger basis, a full long-haul flight can be more efficient than a single-occupant car. Sharing a car with multiple people reduces per-person emissions significantly.

How is the tree offset calculated?

One mature tree absorbs approximately 21 kg of CO₂ per year. We divide your per-passenger CO₂ by 21 to estimate how many trees would offset your journey in one year.

How to use the travel carbon calculator

Use this travel carbon calculator to estimate the CO₂ emissions of your trip by flight, car, train, or bus. Enter your transport mode, distance or route, and number of passengers above. The tool calculates emissions per person and total trip CO₂ in kg. Free, private, and works on any device.

How the travel carbon calculator works

The travel carbon calculator applies DEFRA and ICAO emission factors per kilometre for each transport mode, adjusted for cabin class and vehicle type. It shows per-person and total emissions in kg CO₂e. All calculations run locally in your browser — no route or personal data is uploaded to any server.

What is this tool?

Estimate the carbon footprint of any journey and compare flights, trains, cars, buses, and cruise ships by CO₂ per kilometre.

How to interpret results

Lower CO₂ per km means a greener travel option. The tree-offset figure shows how many trees would need to absorb your emissions over one year to neutralise your trip.
