Frequently asked questions

What is the Canada Child Benefit (CCB)?

The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment to eligible families with children under 18. For 2024-25: maximum $619.75/month per child under 6, $522.91/month per child 6-17. Amounts are indexed to inflation annually. CCB replaced the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) and is much more generous for lower-income families while phasing out at higher incomes.

How is CCB calculated for 2024-25?

CCB uses your 2023 adjusted family net income (AFNI). Below $36,502: full CCB. Above $36,502: first phase-out (7–23% rate depending on children). Above $79,087: second phase-out (3.2–9.5% rate). A family with $100,000 income and 2 children might receive ~$5,000/year; at $150,000, ~$2,000/year; at $200,000+, minimal or none.

Can both parents claim CCB?

Only one parent (the primary caregiver) can receive CCB per household. In most families, CRA automatically designates the mother as primary caregiver. For shared custody (50/50 split), each parent can apply for 50% of the CCB for the child. Both parents must file their taxes annually for CCB to continue — missing a tax return can cause payments to stop.

Is CCB affected by RRSP contributions?

Yes — RRSP contributions reduce your net income, which is used to calculate CCB. A $10,000 RRSP contribution at $80,000 income (2 children) could increase annual CCB by roughly $570–$950, depending on the phase-out rates. This is an important "hidden" RRSP benefit beyond the immediate tax deduction — RRSP contributions can significantly boost CCB payments.
