Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost of infant daycare in the United States?
The national average cost of full-time infant daycare in the US is approximately $1,400 per month, but this varies enormously by location — from around $800/month in rural areas to over $2,800/month in cities like San Francisco, Boston, or New York City.
How does the UK's free childcare entitlement work?
In England, working parents of 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 30 hours of free childcare per week during term time (15 hours for non-working parents). From September 2024, this was extended to children from 9 months old for working parents, who receive 15 free hours per week. Scotland and Wales have their own similar schemes.
Is childcare subsidised in Canada?
Yes. The Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) agreement aims to reduce average licensed childcare fees to CA$10 per day by 2025. Quebec already operates at this rate. Other provinces are phasing in reductions. Only licensed regulated childcare facilities qualify.
What is the Child Care Subsidy in Australia?
The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is an income-tested government payment that covers a percentage of childcare fees for approved care. Families earning under A$80,000 can receive up to 90% subsidy. The subsidy tapers as income rises and reaches 0% above around A$530,000.
Is childcare expensive in India?
Government anganwadi centres provide free early childhood care and education under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. However, in urban areas, parents often prefer private crèches or nurseries, which cost ₹3,000–₹8,000 per month depending on the city and facility quality.

Why childcare costs vary so much
Childcare costs are driven by staff-to-child ratios required by law (which are highest for infants), real estate costs, and the level of government subsidy in each country. The United States and the United Kingdom are among the most expensive countries for childcare relative to median wages, with full-time infant nursery often exceeding 20–30% of household income before subsidies. Australia is similarly costly in absolute terms but the Child Care Subsidy significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs for most families. Canada is actively reducing costs through the federal CWELCC plan. India has one of the most affordable private childcare markets in the world, with even lower costs available through the government anganwadi network.
Types of childcare and their cost differences
Nurseries and daycare centres are typically the most structured option with regulated staff ratios, which makes them more expensive for infants than for older children. Childminders (registered home-based carers) are usually cheaper than nurseries and offer a more intimate setting. Nannies are the most expensive but offer one-to-one care and maximum flexibility. Au pairs, who live with the family and receive a room, meals, and a weekly stipend rather than a salary, are an affordable option for some families but are most suitable for school-age children rather than infants.
Making the most of government subsidies
Every country in this calculator offers some form of childcare financial support. In the US, the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit offsets a portion of costs at tax time. UK parents should register for their Tax-Free Childcare account (government adds 20p for every 80p you save) in addition to the free hours entitlement. Australian families should apply for the Child Care Subsidy through Centrelink before enrolment. Canadian families should look for licensed CWELCC-participating providers to access the reduced-fee programme. In India, the anganwadi system is a free, underutilised resource for parents who qualify.
