Frequently asked questions
What are the GST slabs in India?
India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods and services), 12% (processed foods, business class air travel), 18% (most services, electronics, restaurants), and 28% (luxury goods, cars, tobacco). A 0% slab exists for essentials like unbranded food grains and fresh produce.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For intra-state (same state) sales, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state sales, the entire tax is collected as IGST (Integrated GST) by the Centre, which is then shared with the destination state.
How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Divide the total by (1 + GST rate/100). For example, to remove 18% GST from ₹1,180: 1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price. The GST amount is ₹180.
Is GST applicable on all goods and services?
No. Several items are exempt from GST — fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, books, newspapers, and certain health services. Petroleum products, alcohol for human consumption, and electricity are also outside the GST framework.

Understanding GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaced 17 different central and state taxes in India from July 2017. It is a destination-based, multi-stage consumption tax levied at each stage of the supply chain, with input tax credit available to businesses at each stage.
How GST is split: CGST, SGST, IGST
For transactions within a state, the GST is divided equally between the Centre (CGST) and the State (SGST). For example, 18% GST on an intra-state sale becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state transactions, the full 18% is collected as IGST by the Centre and later apportioned to the destination state.
Reverse GST calculation
When you receive a GST-inclusive invoice and need the pre-tax base price, divide the total by (1 + rate/100). Many businesses receive inclusive quotes and need this reverse calculation to correctly record the base amount and input tax credit separately.
