How degrees Fahrenheit convert to degrees Celsius
Degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius are related by an offset as well as a scale. The formula the widget uses is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, and it is applied to whatever number is typed into the °F field.
Two reference points follow from the formula: 0 °F is -17.77777778 °C, and a change of 1 °F corresponds to a change of 0.55555556 °C. The opposite formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
Degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius reference table
Here are 12 values from the °F scale converted to °C. Because the scales are offset, the rows are not proportional to one another.
| Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) | Degrees Celsius (°C) |
|---|---|
| -40 | -40 |
| -10 | -23.33333333 |
| 0 | -17.77777778 |
| 14 | -10 |
| 32 | 0 |
| 50 | 10 |
| 59 | 15 |
| 68 | 20 |
| 77 | 25 |
| 86 | 30 |
| 100 | 37.77777778 |
| 212 | 100 |
Every row comes from the same function as the widget and keeps its rounding, so a figure copied from this table matches what the converter returns for that input.
Examples: turning degrees Fahrenheit into degrees Celsius
Example 1. A reading of 91 °F goes into °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, and the result is 32.77777778 °C.
A second reading, 12 degrees Fahrenheit, becomes -11.11111111 degrees Celsius. Converting that result in the opposite direction recovers 12.
Working backwards, a reading of 34 °C corresponds to 93.2 °F.
Going from degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit
A dedicated page covers the opposite direction: Celsius to Fahrenheit. In that case the formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.

Frequently asked questions
What is 1 degree Fahrenheit in degrees Celsius?
1 °F equals -17.22222222 °C. This is a reading, not a ratio: 0 °F is -17.77777778 °C, and every extra 1 °F adds 0.55555556 °C. For example, 10 °F is -12.22222222 °C.
How many °F is 1 °C?
Using °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, 1 °C comes to 33.8 °F. Taking 10 °C instead gives 50 °F.
What does 82 °F come to in °C?
The result is 27.77777778 °C. The widget applies the scale change and the offset to 82 °F.
What precision does the °F to °C result use?
Yes, the displayed °C value is trimmed. The converter prints at most 10 significant digits at or above 1, at most 8 below 1, and at most 6 decimals from 1,000 up, using exponent notation for extreme sizes. Two samples from this pair: 0.123456789 °F becomes -17.70919067 °C, and 1,234.5678 °F becomes 668.0932222 °C.
How does the widget get from degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius?
Each temperature unit is defined in the converter by a pair of functions that map it to and from Kelvin. Going from degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius runs the input through the first unit's function and then the second unit's inverse, which collapses to °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
Can this converter go from °C to °F too?
Yes. The page titled "Celsius to Fahrenheit" covers it, or you can press the swap button in the widget above. The arithmetic is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, so 25 °C is 77 °F.
