Formula for converting degrees Fahrenheit into kelvins

The step from degrees Fahrenheit to kelvins needs the formula K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15. A plain ratio would not work here, since 0 °F does not line up with 0 K.

K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15

The size of one °F step is 0.55555556 K, and the starting point is 255.3722222 K at 0 °F. Undoing the conversion uses °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32.

Worked examples for degrees Fahrenheit to kelvins

Suppose the starting reading is 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The converter returns 280.3722222 kelvins.

Next, 225 °F: the converter shows 380.3722222 K. Reversing the conversion with °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 gets you back to about 225 °F.

For the last case, begin at 140 kelvins. The reverse formula °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 gives -207.67 degrees Fahrenheit.

The reverse: kelvins to degrees Fahrenheit

There is no separate page for kelvins to degrees Fahrenheit, but the swap button in the converter above flips the direction. For that direction the formula is °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32.

For other combinations, the Temperature Converter offers every unit in one pair of dropdowns.

Frequently asked questions

What does 1 °F come to in K?

A reading of 1 °F corresponds to 255.9277778 K. The formula K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 also gives 255.3722222 K at 0 °F, 260.9277778 K at 10 °F and 310.9277778 K at 100 °F.

How much is 1 K on the °F scale?

The converter returns -457.87 °F for 1 K, and -441.67 °F for 10 K; the reverse direction uses °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32.

How do I convert 27 °F to K?

Put 27 through K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 and the answer is 270.3722222 K.

How does the converter round results?

The widget calculates with ordinary floating-point numbers and only rounds what it displays. Results of 1 or more show up to 10 significant digits, results below 1 show up to 8, and results from 1,000 upward show up to 6 decimal places with thousands separators. As an example, 0.123456789 °F displays as 255.4408093 K and 1,234.5678 °F displays as 941.2432222 K.

Where does the °F to K result come from?

Because temperature scales have offsets, the unit table stores conversion functions rather than a single factor. The two functions for °F and K together give K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15.

What is the reverse of °F to K?

Reversing the pair: the formula is °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32. Press the swap button in the widget above, or choose K as the "From" unit. Example: 25 K = -414.67 °F.
