Frequently asked questions
What is the Twitter/X character limit?
Twitter (now X) has a 280 character limit for standard users, increased from the original 140 characters in 2017. X Premium (paid) users can post much longer content, but the standard free limit remains 280 characters.
How are URLs counted on Twitter?
Twitter uses a URL shortener (t.co) for all links, so every URL — regardless of its actual length — counts as exactly 23 characters. A long URL and a short URL both use 23 characters of your 280 limit.
Do emojis count as 1 or 2 characters?
On Twitter/X, most standard emojis count as 2 characters. Some complex emojis (combined characters or skin tone variations) may count as more. Our counter uses Unicode emoji detection to identify emojis and flag them.
Do spaces count toward the character limit?
Yes, every space character counts as 1 character in the 280 limit. Line breaks also count as 1 character each.

Why tweet length matters
Tweets under 100 characters typically receive 17% higher engagement than longer posts, as they leave room for replies and retweets with comments. However, the sweet spot for most content is 71–100 characters for conversational tweets and 200–260 characters for informational threads where you want to include context. Our counter helps you hit those ranges precisely.
Tips to shorten your tweet
Replace "because" with "since", "however" with "but", "in order to" with "to". Remove filler words like "very", "really", "just". Use "&" instead of "and". Use numerals ("5") instead of words ("five"). Shorten URLs with a link shortener — though X auto-shortens all links to 23 chars already. Remove obvious hashtags that are implied by your content.
