What is the penalty for late ITR filing?

Under Section 234F, the penalty for late ITR filing (after July 31) is: ₹1,000 if your total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh; ₹5,000 if your total income exceeds ₹5 lakh. The penalty is the same whether you file on August 1 or December 31. Additionally, if there is outstanding tax payable, interest under Section 234A applies at 1% per month.

Can I file ITR after December 31?
