Frequently asked questions
What are all the Etsy fees?
Etsy charges 4 main fees: (1) Listing fee — $0.20 per listing, renewed every 4 months (or when sold). (2) Transaction fee — 6.5% of the sale price including shipping. (3) Payment processing — 3% + $0.25 per transaction (US). (4) Offsite Ads fee — 12–15% of sales driven by Etsy's offsite ads. Optional: Etsy Plus ($10/month) gives 15 credits for listings and other perks.
How do Etsy Offsite Ads work?
Etsy promotes your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. If a buyer clicks an offsite ad and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges you 15% (optional sellers) or 12% (mandatory — sellers with $10k+ annual sales). You can't control which items are promoted or on which platforms.
Is Etsy Plus worth it?
Etsy Plus costs $10/month and includes 15 listing credits ($3 value), $5 Etsy Ads credit, customised shop URL, restock notifications for sold-out items, and discounts on custom packaging. It's only worth it if you use the listing credits and URL feature regularly — most sellers with under 100 monthly sales don't benefit enough to justify the cost.
Why does Etsy charge a transaction fee on shipping?
Since 2022, Etsy charges its 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount including shipping. This changed from only charging on the item price. It means sellers who charge shipping separately pay more in fees than those who offer "free shipping" (and build it into the item price). Many sellers now use free shipping with higher item prices to control how fees are calculated.

Free shipping vs charging for shipping on Etsy
Etsy's algorithm favours listings with free shipping in US search results. But the 6.5% transaction fee now applies to shipping charges too. If you charge $5 shipping, you pay $0.325 in transaction fees on it. If you build the $5 into your item price and offer free shipping, the fee is the same but your search ranking improves. Most Etsy sellers benefit from adopting free shipping with adjusted item prices.
How to price your Etsy products profitably
Use the formula: Price = (Materials + Labour + Overhead + Etsy fees) ÷ (1 − target margin). For a 30% margin with $15 in costs and ~15% Etsy fees (worst case), you need: $15 ÷ (1 − 0.30 − 0.15) = $15 ÷ 0.55 = $27.27 minimum price. Always calculate fees before setting prices — most new Etsy sellers under-price because they don't account for all fees.
